Cris “Cyborg” Justino is anxious to get a fight against former UFC woman’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, Cyborg wants UFC president Dana White to make the fight already, as it’s a big one that would increase her MMA star power if she wins.
At 31, Cyborg doesn’t have a lot of time left at the top of the sport before she ages out. She needs the fight against Rousey NOW, not five to ten years from now. White says that the two of them “eventually” will be facing each other, but he doesn’t say when. Rousey has a fight coming up on December 30 against UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207.
White wants to see how that match plays out for Rousey, because the 29-year-old will be fighting for the first time since losing to Holly Holm last year. The results of that fight sent Rousey into seclusion for a year, and it’s only now that she’s emerging for her match against Nunes. It’s quite possible if Rousey loses that fight too, she’ll disappear for another long period. As such, this is not a good time for Cyborg to be pushing for a fight against Rousey, whose career looks totally shaky at the moment.
White said this to FOX Sports 1’s Speak for Yourself about a match between Rousey and Cyborg:
“She wins that fight, her and Cris Cyborg are eventually going to fight. Ronda wants that fight. It will be the biggest pay-per-view in UFC history. We’ll see what happens,” White said. “This thing’s got to play out first and we’ll see what happens.”
Cyborg needs to go in another direction for a while. If the match against Rousey happens, it’ll be because of Rousey and White wanting the fight. Obviously, it won’t help White and the UFC if Rousey takes another loss either to Nunes or to Cyborg. It seems pretty obvious that Rousey is an important part of the UFC’s organization, and it won’t be good if she gets beaten anytime soon. For that reason, the only way I see a match between Rousey and Cyborg taking place realistically is when one or both of them are totally over-the-hill and no longer relevant fighters. White will then put them together in an old timer’s fight, and it’ll draw interest because of the two fighters’ name recognition with the casual MMA fans.
“Cris Cyborg is devastatingly good,” White continued. “She’s been destroying everybody right now. Her popularity is actually starting to go [up]. She’s getting bigger. Everybody wants it right here, right now. It doesn’t happen that way. I promise you this, Ronda has to come in and fight on December 30th. Okay? Ronda has to win, and the girl that she’s fighting is no pushover. She’s nasty and tough and Ronda’s got a fight on her hands there.”
