Nate Diaz is finally coming to the realization that he’s not going to get a trilogy fight against MMA star Conor McGregor anytime soon, and he seems to be fine with that reality for the time being. The 31-year-old Diaz feels that he should have been given the victory in their recent fight on August 20 at UFC 202 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
McGregor was given a five round majority decision despite him fading badly at the end of the five-round contest. The results of the second McGregor-Diaz fight saw Conor limping away with a leg injury that will keep him out of the octagon for the next six months with a medical suspension.
UFC president Dana White has already spoken to the media, saying that there won’t be a trilogy fight right now between McGregor and Diaz. McGregor is going back down to featherweight if he can make the weight to defend his UFC title. In the meantime, the MMA fans are still not convinced that the Irish star did enough to beat Diaz. They still believe that Diaz was given a raw deal in that fight.
Honestly, I’m not so sure that there will be a third fight between Diaz and McGregor. You have to realize that McGregor is a very popular fighter who doesn’t need to fight a guy like Diaz in order to make a lot of noise with the UFC organization. For the executives that pool the strings with the UFC in terms of the match-making that goes on, it’s almost better to keep McGregor away from Diaz permanently so that he can fight as many other UFC fighters as possible to turn them some of them into big names.
If the idea is to create as many stars as possible with the UFC outfit, then it makes sense for the bigwigs with the company to make sure that McGregor doesn’t get stuck fighting one particular fighter too many times, because it keeps him from fighting other guys.
“I was pretty crazy about it for a couple of days but it’s whatever to me,” said Diaz to Chael Sonnen. “I won that fight and I’m not jumping for joy already for round three. I think I beat him twice, so it’s 2-0 as far as I’m concerned. A trilogy fight might get made down the road, I don’t know. I believe [McGregor’s team] know too, because he’s got a smart coach on his hands. Him and his coaches know what happened in the fight and they aren’t stupid, so I think they are going to do what they can to return to his division and get into a new stage,” said Diaz.
I’m not sure that Diaz will be able to keep winning long enough for a third fight between him and McGregor to become a reality. As soon as Diaz gets beaten by someone else, it’ll likely finish any hopes of him facing McGregor again, because that loss could be used as a potential excuse not to make the fight happen.
