Josh Barnett vs. Andrei Arlovski tonight

In what has to be seen as an old timer’s match between aging heavyweights, former UFC champions Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski will be doing battle tonight at UFC Fight Nigh 93t at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. It’s hard to understand why it took this long for Arlovski and Barnett to finally get matched up against each other, because they should have fought each other ages ago when they were briefly in their primes in the MMA.

Arlovski was the UFC heavyweight champion in 2005. He lost the title in the same year in a 1st round stoppage loss to Tim Sylvia. In their rematch, in 2006, Arlovski was beaten by a decision.

The results of the Arlovski vs. Barnett fight really mean very little, because the winner isn’t going anywhere. The division is too stacked right now with younger, talented and stronger overall fighters than either of these guys. This is mainly just a fun fight between a couple of old guys from the distant past.

In the last 10 years, Arlovski has had some success against good competition. However, his career recently hit a sour note with him losing his last two matches against Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem. Both defeats were stoppage losses, which isn’t a good thing.

Both fighters are coming off of disappointing losses, but that’s not surprising given how old they are. Barnett is 38 and Arlovski is 37. It’s been 14 years since Barnett won the UFC heavyweight title in beating Randy Couture back in 2002. Unfortunately for Barnett, he didn’t hold onto his title for very long.

“Putting heavyweights together is a sure way to fights get finished,” said Barnett to the dailymail.co.uk. “The reality is, people look at these guys and girls going into the ring and they see them as heroes of sorts.”

Arlovski is still a big puncher in the stand-up game. However, his chin has been his problem during his career, as he’s been stopped on a number of occasions and sometimes very quickly in the 1st round. Arlovski is a pretty good wrestler as well if he can get to that part of his matches without getting stopped on his feet from punches or kicks from his younger opponents.

“There’s no doubt that Josh Barnett is very dangerous on the ground, and on the feet, but, I feel like it could be a good fight for me,” Arlovski said to the Dailymail.co.uk.

The Barnett vs. Arlovski matches is mainly just an old timer’s match, as neither of these guys are major players at the top of the UFC heavyweight division. You can’t put either of them in with the top fighters and expect them to win unfortunately.
