Welterweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will be facing former Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 205 on December 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be the first MMA fight card in Buffalo, New York since UFC 7 back in 1995. Cerrone, 33, was supposed to be fighting former UFC welterweight belt hold Robbie Lawler, but he decided he wanted to take more time off after his 1st round knockout loss to Tyron Woodley in July of this year at UFC 205.
Gastelum, 24, was supposed to be fighting Jorge Masvidal on November 12 at at the UFC Fight Night in Mexico City. Instead, Gastelum will be fighting Cerrone at UFC 205. It’s good news for MMA fans, because it should be a great fight with a lot of action for as long as it goes. Depending on the results of the fight, we could see Cerrone in some big matches in 2017.
Gastelum is coming off of a three round decision win over the always capable Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 back in July of this year in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a catch-weight fight, and Hendricks came in overweight. Gastelum is moving up in the welterweight rankings.
Cerrone has looked good lately in winning his last three matches this year. He was beaten by Rafael dos Anjos by a 1st round knockout in December 2015 at UFC on Fox. Since that fight, Cerrone has won three in a row against Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cole and Rick Story. All three wins were stoppage victories for Cerrone. His MMA career is looking bright right now. Cerrone’s loss to Dos Anjos was his defeat against him. Dos Anjos seems to really have Cerrone’s number. Cerrone was also beaten by Anthony Pettis in 2013 at UFC on Fox, Nate Diaz at UFC 141, Benson Henderson [twice] and Jamie Varnier.
The Cerrone vs. Gastelum match should be an interesting fight.
Other fights on the UFC 205 card are as follows:
Rashad Evans vs. Tim Kennedy
Thiago Alves vs. Al Iaquinta
Gian Villante vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima
Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero
