Demian Maia would rather fight for a world title against Tyron Woodley rather than get a big payday in a fight against former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who reportedly is interested in fighting the 38-year-old fighter. St-Pierre St-Pierre is returning to the MMA sport after having been outside of the cage for the last several years. Maia would be able to get a big payday fighing him if he were interested in that fight.
Maia stopped Carlos Condit in the 1st round with an impressive rear-naked choke last month on August 27 at UFC on Fox in Vancouver, Canada. The victory for Maia puts him in position to fight Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title. While that fight won’t mean as much money for Maia than a fight against the 39-year-old St-Pierre, the results of the match will give him the UFC welterweight title and it would help validate his career.
St-Pierre wants the fight against Maia, and he plans on getting back into the octagon on December 10 at UFC 204 in Toronto, Canada. With that date only three months away, it’s important for St-Pierre to iron down his opponent right away so that he can start preparing for his comeback. You’ve got to give St-Pierre a lot of credit.
It’s highly ambitious for him to want to make his return to MMA against a fighter as good as Maia. He’s not the typical tune-up type of opponent that you see fighters stepping nto the cage to fight. St-Pierre either has spotted vulnerability in Maia’s game that he think he can exploit or he simply doesn’t care to take the easy route to getting back into the sport. That kind of a mad rush back to MMA seems almost foolish on St-Pierre’s part. He’s asking for trouble if he faces someone as good as Maia in his first fight back.
“I’m honored that he mentioned my name because he’s a legend,” Maia told MMA Fighting.com. “He’s maybe the only fighter to leave as champion. He’s one of the best, for sure, alongside Anderson (Silva). I consider Anderson the best of all time, but he’s definitely the No. 2. But my goal is to fight for the title. I want to fight for the title. After that, it would be a pleasure to fight him or anyone else. If everything goes according to my plans, I’ll come out as champion and then I can fight him next.”
Hopefully for Maia’s sake he wins a title, because it would be a pity if he turns down a good money fight against then ends up losing in his fight for the UFC welterweight title belt.
