Ronda Rousey was destroyed in 48 seconds by UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, and it’s now unclear whether she’ll ever return to the octagon again to resume her MMA career. It was a pure disaster for Rousey in challenging Nunes after having suffered a devastating 2nd round knockout loss to Holly Holm a year earlier in November 2015.
It was going to be bad for Rousey with her taking on such a good fighter after being out of the sport for over a year. In other sports like boxing, a fighter takes a number of tune-ups when they’re coming off of a long layoff like the one that Rousey had. They don’t just plunge straight into a dangerous fight like the one Rousey did against Nunes. They know better.
The 29-year-old Ronda Rousey was not only coming off of a long layoff from the UFC, but also a knockout loss to Holm. She needed at least one tune-up. The fact that she didn’t get one makes you wonder whether she was cashing out with the Nunes fight. Surely, someone had to have warned Rousey that it wasn’t smart for her to take on a dangerous fighter like Nunes in her first fight back.
The UFC brass would have done well by giving Rousey a chance to take some easy fights so that she could work on building up her confidence level before taking on good opposition once again.
The Nunes-Rousey fight was like a blur. As soon as the match began, Nunes charged across the cage and started to hit Rousey at will with power shots to the head and body. It was pathetic to watch. Rousey looked like a rank amateur out there, and she had no defense for anything that was thrown at her by Nunes in that round. Nunes couldn’t miss. She was throwing power shots and connecting cleanly without anything coming back. There was no head movement at all from Rousey or any attempt to block the incoming shots.
If history is any guide, Rousey will go into seclusion and avoid the MMA public and stay away from the sport for another year or so. Instead of learning and improving on the mistakes she made, Rousey will be inactive and do whatever she does when she’s licking her wounds from one of her losses.
